How to Get a NIF in Portugal: Step-by-Step (2026)

Last updated: July 2026

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a nine-digit Portuguese tax number — and the single most important piece of paper in your relocation. Without it you cannot open a bank account, sign a lease, set up utilities, buy property, or get paid. The good news: it's free in person, cheap online, and you don't need to be in Portugal to get one.

What you'll need it for

Practically everything: bank accounts, rental contracts, buying a SIM card on contract, employment, utilities, health insurance, buying a car, even loyalty cards at the supermarket. Get it before anything else in your move — it's step one of our full moving checklist.

The three ways to get a NIF

Option 1 — In person at Finanças (free)

If you're already in Portugal, walk into any Finanças (tax office) or Loja do Cidadão with:

  • Passport (or EU ID card)
  • Proof of address — and this is the catch:
    • EU/EEA residents: proof of your address (home country or Portugal) is enough.
    • Non-EU citizens without Portuguese residency: you officially need a fiscal representative — a Portuguese resident who accepts tax correspondence on your behalf. A friend who is a resident can do it (they sign a simple acceptance); otherwise you'll pay a service.

Cost: free. Time: same day if you survive the queue — arrive before opening or take a senha (ticket) early. Some offices require appointments; check locally.

Option 2 — Online through a NIF service (easiest from abroad)

Dozens of companies act as your fiscal representative and obtain the NIF remotely. You upload your passport and proof of address, sign a power of attorney digitally, and receive your NIF by email.

  • Cost: €70–150 one-time; many charge €50–100/year for ongoing representation after the first year
  • Time: 2–10 business days
  • Best for: anyone not yet in Portugal — which is most people, since the NIF should come before the visa

Option 3 — Power of attorney to a lawyer or friend

Any Portuguese resident (a lawyer, or a trusted friend) can obtain your NIF with a signed power of attorney. Useful if you already have a relocation lawyer handling your visa; pointless to pay for separately when Option 2 exists.

About the fiscal representative requirement

Two things worth knowing in 2026:

  1. You can drop the representative later. Once you become a Portuguese resident (residence permit + address registered with Finanças), the representative is no longer required — update your address on the Portal das Finanças and cancel the service so you stop paying annual fees.
  2. Enable electronic notifications instead. Non-residents who activate electronic notifications on the Portal das Finanças are in many cases exempt from needing a fiscal representative at all. Ask the tax office or your provider about this — it can save you the recurring fee.

After you get your NIF

  • Guard the document (or at least the number + the associated address). Banks will ask for the NIF document, not just the number.
  • Register on the Portal das Finanças (portaldasfinancas.gov.pt) and request your password — it arrives by post to the registered address, so do it early.
  • Update your address whenever it changes. Fines for stale addresses are real, and your bank/AIMA correspondence depends on it.
  • Next step: open your Portuguese bank account

Common mistakes

  1. Waiting until arrival. You'll want the NIF weeks before the visa application (bank account, lease). Get it remotely.
  2. Paying yearly representation forever. After residency, cancel it.
  3. Using a random address. The NIF's registered address receives official mail. Use one you (or your representative) actually monitor.
  4. Assuming the NIF gives you residency or tax obligations. It doesn't — a NIF alone doesn't make you a tax resident. Tax residency comes from spending 183+ days/year in Portugal or having your habitual home there.

FAQ

Is the NIF free? In person at Finanças, yes. Online services charge €70–150 because they provide the fiscal representation non-EU applicants need.

Can I get a NIF without an address in Portugal? Yes — your home-country address works. Non-EU applicants need a fiscal representative, not a Portuguese address.

How long is a NIF valid? Forever. It never expires and never changes, even if you leave Portugal and come back years later.

Do I need a NIF for a short holiday? No. Tourists only encounter it as the "Contribuinte?" question at checkout — you can ignore it. It matters when you rent long-term, buy, or move.

Does having a NIF mean I pay tax in Portugal? No. Tax residency is determined by where you live (183+ days rule), not by having the number.
